A young mother says she “didn’t know how to cope” after discovering her newborn son had a rare tumor that had gone completely undetected until the moment he was born.

Crislaine Camila Rodrigues da Silva, 22, from Paraíba, Brazil, was left stunned when doctors revealed that her baby boy, Pedro, had been born with a large growth on his lip caused by a rare condition known as angioleiomyoma — an uncommon vascular tumor formed by smooth muscle cells around blood vessels.

“Pedro was born with the tumor,” Crislaine explained. “We had no idea during the pregnancy. We only found out during childbirth.”

The devastating discovery turned what should have been one of the happiest moments of her life into fear and uncertainty as doctors began investigating the unusual growth.

According to specialists, angioleiomyoma is extremely rare in children — and even rarer on the lip.

Head and neck surgeon Dr. Klécius Leite Fernandes, who later performed Pedro’s operation, said the case was unlike anything he had previously seen.

“After reviewing medical literature from around the world, this appeared to be one of the largest tumors of this type ever reported for a child his age and in that location,” he explained.

Doctors say the tumor became increasingly aggressive as Pedro grew older.

Over recent months, the swelling rapidly increased in size, affecting his ability to eat comfortably and raising concerns it could eventually interfere with speech and nearby structures in his face.

“The lesion was visibly growing,” Dr. Fernandes said. “It had reached a point where surgical intervention became urgently necessary.”

Because the condition closely resembled another vascular disorder called a hemangioma, diagnosing it correctly proved difficult. Specialists explained that advanced imaging and a biopsy with immunohistochemical testing were ultimately needed to confirm the exact condition.

For over a year, Pedro’s family lived with uncertainty while waiting for the right treatment plan.

Now, after finally undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, the little boy is recovering — and his family says the transformation has been emotional to witness.

“Amazing,” Crislaine said while describing the results.

Before-and-after images shared by the family show the remarkable change following the operation, with loved ones expressing relief that Pedro can now begin moving forward after such a difficult start to life.

Although recovery is still ongoing, his family says they are finally beginning to feel hopeful again after months of fear and unanswered questions.

“There were moments we felt overwhelmed,” his mother admitted. “But seeing him now gives us so much strength. He’s been fighting since the day he was born.”

Today, little Pedro continues healing surrounded by the love of his family — a small boy whose journey has already touched thousands of hearts online.
