LATEST UPDATE: Seventh Suspect Arrested in Brutal Waialee Beach Assault — Community Demands Full Accountability

What began as a violent attack on a teenager at a secluded North Shore beach has now become one of Hawaii’s most talked-about criminal investigations of the year.

Honolulu Police have confirmed that a seventh suspect has now been arrested in connection with the shocking assault that took place on the night of May 30 at Waialee Beach, a location often referred to by locals as “Dead Man’s Curve.” The latest arrest came after a 19-year-old man voluntarily turned himself in to police, joining six juvenile suspects already charged in the case. Authorities say the investigation remains active and additional arrests are still possible.

A Night of Violence That Shocked Hawaii

According to investigators, the incident began when a 15-year-old boy was allegedly surrounded and attacked by a group of individuals. Witnesses say the teen was dragged from a vehicle, restrained, and repeatedly punched and kicked by multiple attackers. Police later determined that both victims were allegedly prevented from leaving during parts of the assault, leading investigators to add kidnapping-related allegations to the case.

The situation escalated when 23-year-old North Shore lifeguard Kekoa Tamale stepped in.

Tamale, known in the community as a dedicated first responder and ocean safety professional, saw the teenager being overwhelmed by a crowd and made a split-second decision to intervene.

“I felt like if nobody did anything, that boy could have died,” Tamale later told local media.

What happened next has outraged residents across Hawaii.

After helping create an opportunity for the teenager to escape and seek help, Tamale allegedly became the new target of the group. He says multiple attackers turned on him, repeatedly striking him, tackling him, and at one point attempting to force his head underwater.

Serious Injuries for Both Victims

The assault left both victims hospitalized with significant injuries.

Tamale suffered a broken hand, a fractured eye socket, a concussion, and required reconstructive surgery around his eye. The teenage victim reportedly sustained a broken nose, head injuries, dental trauma, and possible vision complications. Both have since been released from the hospital and are continuing their recovery at home under medical supervision.

Family members describe the emotional toll as overwhelming.

Friends of the victims say the physical injuries will heal, but the psychological impact of such a public and violent attack may last much longer.

Videos, Social Media, and Public Tips Help Investigato

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case is that numerous bystanders reportedly recorded the assault instead of intervening.

Several videos quickly spread across social media platforms, generating outrage throughout Hawaii and beyond. While the footage angered many viewers, investigators say it also became a crucial source of evidence. Public tips, photographs, and videos have helped detectives identify suspects and piece together the sequence of events.

The public response has been enormous.

Within days, community members shared surveillance footage, cellphone videos, and eyewitness accounts. Police credit this cooperation as a major reason why multiple suspects have now been identified and taken into custody.

Charges Continue to Grow

Authorities have already filed petitions charging multiple juvenile suspects with Attempted Assault in the First Degree. Two 17-year-old suspects face additional charges including Attempted Assault in the Second Degree. Investigators previously examined potential kidnapping allegations after determining that the victims were allegedly restrained during the attack.

The newest development came when the 19-year-old suspect surrendered to police and was arrested for Attempted Assault in the First Degree.

Police continue to emphasize that the case is far from over.

Detectives are still reviewing video evidence and interviewing witnesses, and officials have publicly stated that additional arrests are anticipated.

A Community United Behind the Victims

Across Oahu’s North Shore, support for Kekoa Tamale and the teenage victim has been overwhelming.

Many residents have praised Tamale for risking his own safety to protect a young person in danger. Community members describe his actions as courageous and selfless, noting that he stepped forward when many others stood back.

The case has also sparked broader conversations about youth violence, social media culture, accountability, and the responsibility of bystanders during emergencies.

For many in Hawaii, this investigation is no longer just about one night at one beach.

It has become a test of whether those responsible for a brutal group assault will be fully identified and held accountable.
