Latest Update on the Madeleine McCann Case: UK Police Reportedly Push for Trial of Main Suspect

Nearly two decades after Madeleine McCann disappeared from Praia da Luz, Portugal, the case has returned to global attention after new reports suggested British police are still actively pursuing a possible prosecution against the main suspect, Christian Brueckner.
According to recent UK reports, Madeleine’s family MP, Peter Bedford, has called for Brueckner to be extradited to the UK if prosecutors believe there is enough evidence to bring him to trial. ITV reported that the Metropolitan Police are said to be pushing for Brueckner to face trial in Britain over Madeleine’s alleged abduction and murder.
However, any extradition attempt could face a major legal obstacle. Legal experts told The Independent that Germany is unlikely to extradite one of its own citizens to the UK because Britain is no longer in the European Union. German constitutional protections may allow Germany to refuse surrendering Brueckner to a non-EU country.
Christian Brueckner remains the main named suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance, but he has always denied involvement and has not been charged in the McCann case. He was released from a German prison in September 2025 after serving a sentence for an unrelated rape conviction. Reuters reported that after his release, he was placed under strict conditions, including an electronic tag, regular meetings with a parole officer, and residence reporting requirements.
Operation Grange, the Metropolitan Police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, is still active. The Met says it continues to work with law enforcement partners in Portugal and Germany, and the operation remains funded by the UK Home Office.
There was also a renewed search in Portugal in June 2025. Portuguese police carried out search warrants in the Algarve after a request from German authorities. The search focused on areas near Praia da Luz and locations connected to Brueckner, but no public breakthrough has been confirmed.
Another recent development involved Julia Wandelt, a Polish woman who falsely claimed she could be Madeleine McCann. In November 2025, she was found guilty of harassing Kate and Gerry McCann, though she was cleared of stalking. The court heard that her actions had caused distress to the family.
Current Status
The Madeleine McCann case remains unsolved. Madeleine has never been found, and no one has been convicted over her disappearance. The most important recent development is not a confirmed breakthrough, but a possible legal push to bring Christian Brueckner before a court — either in the UK, Germany, or potentially another jurisdiction.
For now, the case remains open, painful, and unresolved. The world is still waiting for the answer to the question that has haunted this story since 2007: what happened to Madeleine McCann?
