Owen’s Rare Acalvaria Diagnosis Became A Story Of Faith, Survival, And A Family’s Hope After Doctors Feared He Would Not Live
After a previous miscarriage, the pregnancy seemed to be progressing normally until a 20-week ultrasound raised the first concern. Doctors were unable to clearly see the baby’s head, so another scan was scheduled for a few weeks later.
At 24 weeks, the situation became far more serious when fetal medicine specialists joined the evaluation. They confirmed that Owen’s brain and skull were not developing properly and that there were significant abnormalities. Although there was not yet a final diagnosis, the prognosis was considered life-threatening.

The news devastated the family. They were forced to process their heartbreak while also finding the strength to tell relatives and friends what was happening. Later, after genetic testing and specialized evaluations in St. Louis, doctors confirmed that Owen had acalvaria, an extremely rare congenital condition marked by the absence of skull bones and related structures. Survival was considered highly unlikely.
Faced with the diagnosis, the family was given two choices: continue the pregnancy or end it. They chose to continue, holding tightly to faith, love, and hope.
Against all expectations, Owen survived. His life became a powerful reminder that even in the most frightening circumstances, hope can remain.

In July 2021, his baby brother Judah was born, bringing renewed joy to the family. His parents said they felt deeply blessed that Owen was there to welcome him. Though Owen still does not walk or speak, they can see his love for Judah in his smiles and laughter.
Today, Owen is seen as a true miracle by those who know him. His story has touched many people, inspiring them through his strength, his family’s devotion, and the love that continues to surround him.
