Thai Community Mourns After Pilgrimage Turns Deadly

A religious walk meant to symbolize peace, discipline, and devotion ended in heartbreak in Thailand after a pickup truck crashed into a procession of Buddhist monks in Mukdahan province.

The monks had just started a long pilgrimage toward Ubon Ratchathani when the crash happened. Reports say they were walking along the roadside in single file, following a traditional practice in which monks travel on foot and depend on support from local communities along the way.

The vehicle was reportedly driven by an 11-year-old boy who had taken his parents’ truck without permission. CCTV footage captured the moment the truck hit the procession, according to Euronews.

At least 10 people were killed, and others were injured. Two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, according to local hospital officials cited by Euronews.

The incident has left many people across Thailand grieving. For Buddhist communities, the loss is not only a traffic tragedy but also a spiritual wound. The victims were monks who had chosen a path of simplicity and service, and their journey ended only minutes after it began.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, while the boy has reportedly been referred to child welfare officials for assessment.
