Missing 4-Year-Old Girl Presumed Dead; Parents Charged with Homicide by Child Abuse

Authorities in Aiken County, South Carolina, have announced that 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, who was reported missing from her family home on June 30, 2026, is believed to be dead. Investigators now suspect she had already been deceased for at least one month at the time of the initial missing person report.
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office stated that Javeayah is presumed dead. Her father, 23-year-old Johmarea Harris, and her mother, 22-year-old Michilae Herring, were arrested and charged in connection with her death.

- Johmarea Harris was charged with homicide by child abuse.
- Michilae Herring was charged with homicide by child abuse and filing a false police report.
Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer Jr. said in a statement:
“Sadly, it was already too late to save her the moment the 911 call came in on June 30.”
Initially, authorities believed Javeayah had disappeared from her home near Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road in Aiken around 8:15 p.m. on June 30. A large-scale search involving over 3,000 acres was conducted, using foot teams, helicopters, drones, and dogs.

The sheriff noted that the girl’s extended family has requested privacy as they grieve. Law enforcement continues to search for Javeayah’s body in an area of interest outside Aiken County, with support from federal and state agencies. Additional charges against the parents are possible.
This is a developing story.
