Newborn Zebra About To Drown In Dam Reaches Out To Park Ranger For Help
Late last year, a newborn zebra faced a life-or-death struggle in the wild — a moment that could have ended in tragedy if not for a stranger’s quick action.
The tiny foal, only a few days old, was found trapped in a dam within a protected Intensive Protection Zone in South Africa. Too weak and unsteady to climb out on his own, he had collapsed into the water and was slowly succumbing to exhaustion and cold.
By sheer luck, a man named Bernardo happened to pass by and noticed the desperate scene. Realizing the urgency, he immediately contacted Care for Wild, a local wildlife rescue organization known for responding to critical situations. Within a short time, a rescue team was dispatched to the location.
“When they reached him, it was clear just how young he was — only a few days old, with his umbilical cord still attached,” Care for Wild later shared.
From the circumstances, rescuers believed the foal had become separated from his mother while she approached the dam to drink. Still learning to stand and move, the fragile newborn likely slipped into the water and was unable to get back out. Alone, frightened, and weakening by the minute, his chances of survival were slipping away.
Without hesitation, the rescue team sprang into action. Carefully approaching the exhausted animal, they reached out to lift him to safety. In a touching moment, the tiny zebra stretched out his hooves toward them — almost as if he understood they were there to help.
Once pulled from the water, it became clear just how critical his condition was. Prolonged exposure had left the foal dangerously hypothermic. The team quickly began emergency care, drying his soaked body, wrapping him in warm towels from their ambulance, and placing a blindfold over his eyes to reduce stress and keep him calm.
They then transported him to Care for Wild’s intensive care facility, where further treatment continued. Warm milk was given to help restore his blood sugar levels, and he was treated for shock. Remarkably, after just a few sips, the little zebra began to show signs of recovery — a small but hopeful turning point.
But the mission wasn’t complete yet.
The ultimate goal was not just to save the foal, but to reunite him with his family. Using drones, the rescue team began searching the surrounding area for his herd. After hours of careful tracking, they finally located them.
Before returning the foal, rescuers took an important step: they rubbed zebra dung onto his body to mask any human scent, increasing the chances that his mother and herd would accept him back.
Then came the moment of truth.
The foal was gently placed in an open clearing near the herd. At first, there was silence — then, the tiny zebra began to call out. Moments later, his mother appeared, followed by the rest of the herd.
“It wasn’t long before the foal began calling, and soon his mother and the rest of the herd appeared,” Care for Wild shared.
