When five newborn puppies arrived at a Kansas animal shelter in May, they were so young that survival depended on something as simple as staying warm.

They had been discovered abandoned inside a bag in the parking lot of a Walmart in McPherson. Their eyes were still closed. Their ears had not yet opened. They could not regulate their own body temperature, eat without assistance or even go to the bathroom on their own.

At roughly one week old, they needed the kind of constant care normally provided by their mother.

Instead, that responsibility suddenly fell to a group of police officers, shelter employees and volunteers who were determined to keep them alive.

An Unusual Call Turns Into an Emergency Rescue

McPherson Police Chief Mikel T. Golden said the discovery was far from a routine call.

Golden and McPherson Animal Shelter Director Emily Sanner responded after the puppies were handed over in a bag. With no time to lose, their attention immediately turned to the tiny animals’ most basic needs.

Sanner obtained supplies to feed the puppies and help maintain their body temperature. Back at the shelter, she created a sleeping area and feeding station where the litter could be closely watched.

The schedule was relentless.

The puppies needed food every two to three hours, day and night. Because they were so young, their caregivers also had to stimulate them so they could relieve themselves.

It was the kind of hands-on care that could not simply be postponed until morning.

Golden said shelter technicians and coworkers quickly volunteered to take shifts, turning the rescue into a round-the-clock effort.

At One Week Old, Almost Everything Was a Risk

The puppies’ age made their situation especially dangerous.

Sanner explained that a puppy around a week old is still dependent on its mother for nearly everything. At that stage, puppies cannot properly control their temperature and cannot eliminate waste without help. Their unopened eyes and ears also mean they are unable to see or hear the world around them.

Nutrition was another urgent concern.

Without their mother, the five puppies had to rely completely on the people caring for them.

But while shelter workers focused on keeping the litter alive, police were trying to answer another important question:

Where was their mother?

Investigators began reviewing Walmart surveillance footage and following information connected to the case. Their search eventually led them to the adult dog believed to be the puppies’ mom.

Finding Mom Changed Everything

Locating the mother was important for more than one reason.

The puppies desperately needed the benefits of nursing, but authorities were also concerned about the adult dog. A mother who suddenly stops nursing can face serious medical complications, Golden explained.

The owner ultimately turned the mother over so she could care for the puppies.

When she arrived at the shelter, the reunion required little encouragement.

According to Sanner, the mother immediately accepted the puppies and appeared thrilled to be back with them.

For shelter workers who had spent days measuring feedings, maintaining warmth and taking shifts around the clock, her arrival meant the puppies once again had something their human caregivers could never fully replace: their mother.

She would later be given the name Shrimpy.

From there, the family’s story began moving in a very different direction.

From Fragile Newborns to Energetic Puppies

The tiny animals who had arrived unable to see or hear gradually began growing into active young dogs.

By July, the puppies had reached about six weeks old. The McPherson Animal Shelter announced on July 22 that all five puppies, along with Shrimpy, were ready to begin the process of finding permanent homes.

They were also no longer simply “the abandoned puppies.”

Each now had a name: Piglet, Fawn, Calf, Duckling and Bunny.

A DNA test offered another glimpse into what the puppies may look and behave like as they grow. According to the shelter, their genetic mix included American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Siberian Husky and Rottweiler.

The shelter described the puppies as energetic, curious and already developing distinct personalities.

And despite the frightening way their lives began, they had experienced something else almost from the moment they were rescued: frequent human contact.

Staff members and volunteers handled the puppies daily, giving them attention and affection throughout their early development.

Now, rather than depending on bottle feedings every few hours, the litter was preparing for the next stage of life — joining families of their own.

A Rescue That Became a Community Effort

The transformation did not happen because of one person alone.

Police helped bring the puppies to safety and investigate where they had come from. Shelter workers reorganized their lives around feeding shifts. Volunteers stepped in to bottle-feed the newborns. Others donated supplies or shared the puppies’ story.

The McPherson Citizen Journal also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover expenses associated with caring for the animals.

Over several weeks, what began as five vulnerable puppies in a bag became a community effort involving people who gave their time, supplies, money or simply helped spread the word.

The shelter later publicly thanked those who had followed the puppies’ progress and supported them through the difficult first weeks.

For Piglet, Fawn, Calf, Duckling and Bunny, those weeks represented nearly their entire lives.

They entered the shelter unable to survive independently. They needed warmth, feeding and constant supervision. Then their mother was found. They grew stronger. Their personalities began emerging.

Finally, they became adoption candidates rather than emergency patients.

Shrimpy was also placed on the path toward a new home alongside her puppies.

The investigation surrounding the abandonment, however, had not completely ended. Golden said the case remained pending with possible charges against the owner.

For the dogs themselves, the focus had shifted toward what comes next.

The five puppies who once depended on strangers simply to make it through another few hours were now healthy enough for a far more hopeful question to replace the urgent ones that surrounded their rescue:
