The 24-year-old Kentucky woman is preparing to marry Noah Waters, a man she has known since childhood. But behind their relationship is an extraordinary connection that began long before either of them could have imagined becoming husband and wife.

More than two decades ago, Brooklyn was a critically ill baby whose family had been told she might have only days left to live.

The organ that saved her came from Noah’s older brother, Michael Waters.

Brooklyn’s story nearly ended before she had the chance to remember any of it.

In 2003, when she was only a few months old, doctors diagnosed her with a rare liver condition. Her prognosis was devastating. According to Brooklyn’s account, her family was told she might have only three days remaining.

The situation had become so desperate that her mother was advised to begin making funeral arrangements.

But Brooklyn’s mother was not ready to accept that outcome.

She continued hoping for the one thing that could give her daughter another chance: a donor liver.

Against the clock, one became available.

Brooklyn underwent transplant surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The procedure gave her something her family had feared was slipping away — a future.

Yet the lifesaving organ had come from another family experiencing an unimaginable loss.

The 10-Year-Old Who Wanted to Help Others

Michael Waters was remembered as a caring child who was willing to help people around him.

Even while he was still very young, he had expressed a desire to become an organ donor.
