Cristiano Ronaldo Laughs as Wedding Rumor Sends Hundreds of Fans to the Wrong Ceremony

What was supposed to be Nicole and Fábio’s wedding suddenly looked like one of Madeira’s biggest celebrity events — all because hundreds of people believed Cristiano Ronaldo was about to get married.
On Saturday, Aug. 8, crowds descended on Funchal Cathedral in Ronaldo’s hometown on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Fueled by rumors that the 41-year-old soccer superstar was preparing to marry his fiancée, Georgina Rodríguez, fans gathered outside with phones and cameras ready.
There was just one problem: Ronaldo wasn’t getting married there.
The confusion became clear when the real bride arrived. Instead of Rodríguez, 32, the woman trying to make her way through the enormous crowd was Nicole, whose groom, Fábio, was waiting inside the cathedral. The unexpected attention made it difficult for her even to enter the church for her own ceremony.
Photos and videos of the packed streets quickly circulated online, eventually catching Ronaldo’s attention. His reaction suggested he found the extraordinary misunderstanding amusing: he responded to footage of the scene with a string of laughing emojis.
Despite the disruption, Nicole and Fábio were eventually able to celebrate their marriage. The cathedral later congratulated the couple and described the extraordinary confusion caused by the journalists, tourists and spectators outside.
Some of the couple’s guests also embraced the humor of the situation. One joked that the wedding party suddenly felt famous and questioned how anyone could believe a star of Ronaldo’s stature would hold his wedding without significant security. The guest predicted that the bizarre scene would become a moment people remembered for years.
The mistake was understandable in one respect: anticipation surrounding Ronaldo and Rodríguez’s eventual wedding has been building since they announced their engagement on Aug. 11, 2025.
The longtime couple have been together for nearly a decade and first appeared publicly as a couple in early 2017. They share a large family that includes Eva Maria, Mateo, Alana, Bella and Cristiano Jr. In April 2022, Ronaldo and Rodríguez also announced the death of Bella’s newborn twin brother, Ángel.
But despite all the speculation, Ronaldo and Rodríguez have not publicly confirmed a wedding date.
That left the Aug. 8 scene in Madeira as something far different from the celebrity wedding fans expected. Instead, Nicole and Fábio walked away with a wedding story few couples could ever imagine: hundreds of strangers gathered outside their church expecting one of the most famous athletes in the world — only to discover that the day belonged to them.
