NEW FORENSIC DETAILS REVEAL THE TIMELINE OF LITTLE PRESTON DAVEY’S FINAL MONTHS

LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND — New details from the Preston Davey case have shed further light on the medical evidence used to reconstruct the 13-month-old’s final months—and the findings presented in court were deeply disturbing.

Preston suffered around 40 injuries while in the care of Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley, according to evidence reported during the trial. Medical experts also told the court that some of his injuries could not be explained by attempts to save his life.

Prosecutors presented medical findings alongside photographs, videos, messages and other digital material recovered during the investigation.

That evidence allowed investigators to examine what happened throughout the roughly four months Preston was living with the couple—not simply what happened during his final medical emergency.

Experts also described evidence suggesting Preston had suffered repeated mistreatment before his death.

 HIS FINAL MEDICAL EMERGENCY

On July 27, 2023, Preston was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest.

Varley claimed that Preston had been left in a bath and was later found submerged.

But the medical evidence presented at trial did not support drowning as the cause of death. Prosecutors relied on evidence that Preston died from an acute upper-airway obstruction.

DIGITAL EVIDENCE BECAME A CRITICAL PIECE

Investigators recovered videos and photographs from phones belonging to the men.

Some of the material was used by prosecutors to demonstrate what they alleged was a pattern of cruelty and abuse during Preston’s short time in their care.

The digital evidence was particularly significant because it helped investigators place individual injuries and incidents within a broader timeline.

One important point: Jamie Varley is no longer awaiting trial.

He was convicted of murdering Preston and multiple other offenses and received a whole-life order in June 2026. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was convicted of allowing Preston’s death and other offenses and received a 25-year sentence.

So claims that this new evidence is now “shattering Varley’s defense” should be framed carefully—the jury has already rejected his defense and found him guilty.

THE EVIDENCE RECONSTRUCTED A BABY’S FINAL MONTHS

What makes the forensic evidence so significant is the picture it created when combined with the digital records.

Injuries. Medical findings. Photographs. Videos. Messages.

Piece by piece, investigators reconstructed the short and tragic period between Preston entering the couple’s care and his death.

And ultimately, the court found Jamie Varley responsible for his murder.

Preston was only 13 months old. The evidence became his voice when he could no longer speak for himself.
