NEW EVIDENCE SHEDS LIGHT ON LITTLE PRESTON DAVEY’S FINAL MONTHS — AND THE ADOPTION SYSTEM IS FACING QUESTIONS

LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND — New details from the Preston Davey case have drawn renewed attention to the evidence surrounding the 13-month-old boy’s final months in the care of his prospective adoptive family.

What investigators uncovered was not simply one unexplained incident. Prosecutors presented a combination of medical evidence, photographs, videos, messages and care records as they reconstructed what happened before Preston’s death.

A TRAIL OF EVIDENCE

Medical experts told the court that Preston had suffered around 40 injuries before his death.

Investigators also recovered digital material from the phones of Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley. Prosecutors argued that some of the material documented Preston being mistreated while he was living with the couple.

One particularly significant piece of evidence involved a video that was allegedly used to explain an injury found on Preston. Investigators determined that the footage had actually been recorded 12 days earlier, meaning it could not account for the later injury.

 THE FINAL HOURS

Preston was taken to hospital on July 27, 2023, after being found unconscious and suffering cardiac arrest.

Varley reportedly claimed that Preston had been left in a bath and later discovered submerged.

However, medical evidence presented at trial concluded that Preston died from acute upper-airway obstruction, rather than drowning.

That finding became a crucial part of the prosecution’s case.

THIS IS NO LONGER JUST AN INVESTIGATION

There is also an important update to the way this story should be framed.

Jamie Varley has already been convicted of Preston’s murder. In June 2026, he was sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.

McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted of causing or allowing Preston’s death and received a 25-year sentence.

The evidence therefore isn’t currently “threatening to expose” Varley’s defense—the court has already rejected that defense.

THE QUESTIONS LEFT BEHIND

The case has nevertheless raised difficult questions about how Preston came to be placed in the care of the couple, what warning signs may have existed, and whether more could have been done to protect him.

A tiny child’s final months were reconstructed through medical findings and digital evidence after he was no longer able to tell anyone what happened.

Preston was only 13 months old. The evidence ultimately became his voice.
