THE EVIDENCE THAT CHANGED THE PRESTON DAVEY CASE
LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND — The death of 13-month-old Preston Davey became the center of a major criminal investigation after medical experts uncovered evidence that contradicted the account initially given about the child’s final moments.
Preston had been placed with Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley as part of an adoption process. Prosecutors later presented evidence showing that the toddler had suffered numerous injuries during the months he spent in their care.
The investigation eventually revealed a disturbing pattern that extended far beyond the circumstances of Preston’s death.
A PATTERN OF INJURIES
Medical examinations identified approximately 40 injuries suffered by Preston, including bruising, internal injuries and a healing fracture.
Some injuries were described by experts as inconsistent with ordinary childhood accidents.
Investigators also recovered photographs and videos from mobile phones that prosecutors said provided important evidence about what happened to Preston before his death.
The digital material became particularly significant because it allowed investigators to examine events and injuries over time rather than relying solely on statements made after the child died.
THE DAY PRESTON DIED
On July 27, 2023, Preston was experiencing serious breathing difficulties.
Police evidence later established that a video recorded that afternoon showed the toddler in severe respiratory distress.
Emergency services were eventually called, and Preston was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest.
Doctors attempted to revive him, but he died later that evening.
An initial explanation suggested that Preston had been submerged in a bath.
However, the postmortem examination did not support drowning as the cause of death.
Instead, medical experts concluded that Preston had died from acute upper-airway obstruction.
That finding became a crucial part of the prosecution’s case.
THE FORENSIC PICTURE
The investigation did not focus solely on what happened during Preston’s final hours.
Experts examined injuries that had occurred at different points in time, allowing prosecutors to argue that the child had experienced repeated trauma before the fatal incident.
The evidence included injuries to different parts of his body and a fracture that was already healing when Preston died.
Prosecutors also presented evidence concerning injuries they said were consistent with sexual abuse.
Together with the digital evidence, the medical findings helped prosecutors construct a timeline of Preston’s final months.
A CASE THAT ENDED IN LIFE IMPRISONMENT
Following a lengthy trial at Preston Crown Court, Varley was convicted of murdering Preston.
McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of offenses including causing or allowing Preston’s death.
Varley was subsequently sentenced to a whole-life order, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
McGowan-Fazakerley received a lengthy prison sentence.
The case also prompted renewed questions about the warning signs that existed before Preston’s death, including previous medical concerns and injuries identified while he was living with the defendants.
For investigators, the crucial breakthrough was not a single piece of evidence.
It was the combination of medical records, forensic examinations, digital material and the reconstruction of Preston’s final hours.
What initially appeared to be an unexplained incident involving a toddler ultimately became a murder investigation that exposed a much broader history of harm.
Preston was only 13 months old. The evidence presented in court showed why investigators refused to treat his death as an isolated accident.
