Autopsy Reveals New Details in Mysterious Death of Los Alamos Lab Employee

Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death for Missing Los Alamos National Laboratory Employee
Melissa Casias, 53, an employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, had been missing since June 2025.

Her remains were discovered by a hiker on May 28, 2026, in Carson National Forest, nearly a year after she was reported missing. A gun was reportedly found near the remains.
A newly released autopsy report has now provided more information about her death. The report determined that Casias died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The discovery brought an end to the search for Casias but raised further questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Authorities have not indicated whether the shooting was self-inflicted or involved another person, and the presence of the firearm remains part of the investigation.
The case remains under investigation as officials work to establish the circumstances and timeline leading to Casias’ death.
