Danny Glover’s Daughter Reveals the Subtle Change That Made Her Realize Something Was Wrong

For most of her life, Mandisa Glover knew her father as a man who could reach decades into the past and bring a memory back with remarkable precision.

Danny Glover could remember where he had been, who was standing nearby, what they talked about and even small details surrounding moments that had happened years earlier. His ability to recall the past was so familiar to his daughter that she knew his stories almost as well as he did.

Then, something changed.

Around 2022, Mandisa began listening to stories she had heard countless times before and noticing that they no longer sounded quite complete. Details that had always been there were disappearing.

There were, as she later described it, “pieces” missing.

It was one of the first signs to his family that something was different with the acclaimed actor and activist, who has since been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Now 79, Glover has spoken publicly about living with the condition, while the family members closest to him have described the complicated mixture of caregiving, heartbreak and gratitude that has become part of their everyday lives.

The Change His Daughter Could Hear

Mandisa, Glover’s 50-year-old daughter and only child with his first wife, Asake Bomani, had a particularly clear point of comparison.

Her father had always possessed an extraordinary memory.

He could go back to events from the 1970s and recall specific conversations and surroundings. Stories about his parents had been told so many times that Mandisa knew how they were supposed to unfold.

But in 2022 — the same year Glover received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Oscars for his decades of charitable work and activism — she started detecting gaps.

The familiar stories were still there. They simply were not arriving with all the details she remembered.

That was enough to make her wonder what was happening.

The difference was especially striking because memory had long appeared to be one of her father’s strengths. What might have seemed like an ordinary forgotten detail to someone else stood out to Mandisa because she knew just how much Glover had once been able to retain.

Today, she describes her father’s awareness of his condition as something that can fluctuate.

At certain moments, she believes he understands what is happening. At others, that awareness appears less certain.

Glover himself has acknowledged that accepting the full reality of Alzheimer’s has not been simple. There are memories he can still reach clearly, and those moments seem to carry particular significance for him — reminders that parts of the life he remembers remain firmly within reach.Danny Glover photographed for PEOPLE

Some Memories Remain Powerful

Among the memories that continue to hold a strong place in Glover’s mind are those involving his mother.

One of the most painful and consequential days of his life connected enormous professional news with devastating personal loss.

Glover learned that he had secured a role in the 1984 film Places in the Heart on the same day his mother was killed in a car accident.

Decades later, memories of her remain vivid.

He recalls that she had once wanted to become an actress herself. He also remembers the moment she recognized her son’s ability after seeing him perform in theater.

Glover has revisited that story more than once, remembering their relationship with warmth and humor.

Mandisa knows those stories well. She also sees something of her grandmother’s role reflected in her own relationship with her father.

Father and daughter argue, Mandisa admits, but she describes the back-and-forth as affectionate. In her view, she has almost become the person who can challenge him in the way his mother once did.

Their disagreements are part of their bond.

His Brother Is Beside Him Too

Mandisa is not navigating the changes alone.

Glover’s younger brother, Marty, 67, lives with him in the actor’s longtime San Francisco townhouse and helps care for him.

For Marty, watching Alzheimer’s affect his brother carries another layer of emotion because of everything Danny once did for him.

Marty has spoken openly about difficult periods in his own past, including time spent in jail and institutions and struggles with drugs. The brothers had not always been especially close while growing up, he said, but that changed when Marty began getting into trouble.

Danny stepped in.

He helped his younger brother and eventually brought him to Hollywood. From that point forward, Marty says, the two became inseparable.

Marty later worked in film production, giving him a firsthand view of his brother’s abilities and career.

That history makes witnessing the effects of dementia particularly difficult.

There are moments, Marty says, when seeing the changes becomes emotional. Watching someone he admires experience gradual deterioration is something he wishes his brother did not have to endure.Danny Glover smiling wearing a suit and hat

A Family Adjusting to a New Reality

Glover is now surrounded by a support system that includes Mandisa, Marty and professional caregivers.

Their goal is not centered only on what Alzheimer’s has changed.

It is also about protecting what remains: his relationships, his comfort, his memories and his ability to continue experiencing life alongside the people who love him.

For Marty, caring for his brother is also a way of returning the support Danny gave others throughout his life. He wants Glover to have the best life possible, just as his older brother helped create better lives for the people around him.

For Mandisa, the emotional calculation is even simpler.

Living with Alzheimer’s means facing painful changes in a father she has known all her life. The missing details are reminders that things are no longer as they once were.

But his presence matters more.

Rather than allowing the disease to define every moment they still have together, Mandisa focuses on the fact that her father is here.

Faced with the alternative of losing him entirely, she chooses gratitude.

That perspective does not erase the difficulty of watching a once-extraordinary memory become unpredictable. It does not make caregiving effortless, or eliminate the sadness his brother feels when he sees what the disease is doing.

But within those changes are still familiar pieces of Danny Glover — the actor who remembers his mother, the brother who once stepped in when Marty needed him, the father who can still spar lovingly with his daughter.

Some details may now disappear from stories Mandisa has heard all her life.
