For a brief moment, after days of fear and uncertainty, the family believed Lily was coming home.

“I’VE GOT SOME TERRIBLE NEWS.”

Only around 10 minutes later, authorities realized the information had been misunderstood.

The person found in the bush was Lily — but she had died.

Premier Chris Minns later returned with the heartbreaking clarification:

NSW Police subsequently acknowledged the communication error and apologized for the distress it caused.

Instead, the message was misunderstood and interpreted as meaning Lily had been found alive.

Lily disappeared after leaving for a hike on August 12.

Her vehicle was later located near the Bonnum Pic walking trail, prompting an extensive search of the surrounding wilderness.
