Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty Federally as Questions Remain Over Upcoming New York Murder Trial

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan in connection with the December 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, while his separate New York state murder case remains unresolved.

Mangione admitted in court that he personally shot Thompson and acknowledged that his actions were illegal. His federal plea involved charges related to stalking resulting in death rather than a federal murder conviction.

However, the plea does not resolve the state-level case. Mangione continues to face a second-degree murder charge in New York, and his attorneys are seeking to have the case dismissed under a double jeopardy argument.

The state proceedings have been postponed, leaving uncertainty over whether Mangione will ultimately face a jury trial in New York. Jury selection had originally been scheduled for September 8, 2026.

Meanwhile, Mangione’s federal sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026. Prosecutors are seeking a severe sentence that could potentially include life imprisonment.

The legal battle is therefore far from over, with the outcome of the state court proceedings still to be determined.
