Louisiana Girl, 8, Dies After Suspected Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection Following Lake Swim

Lillian Smart, an 8-year-old girl from Ruston, Louisiana, has died after being suspected of contracting a rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”

Louisiana health officials said the infection was likely linked to swimming in Lake Claiborne. Lillian died on August 22, 2026, just one day after her eighth birthday.

Her family said she suffered severe brain damage from the illness.

The infection causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), an extremely rare and usually fatal disease that attacks the brain. Naegleria fowleri typically enters the body when contaminated water travels through the nose, rather than when the water is swallowed.

Lillian’s death has devastated her family and community, particularly because she died only a day after celebrating her eighth birthday.

Health officials continue to emphasize caution around warm freshwater, where Naegleria fowleri can sometimes be present. While infections are extremely rare, they can progress rapidly once symptoms begin.
