AUBURN, Calif. — A four-day search for a 24-year-old California man who disappeared during a solo hike has ended in tragedy after rescuers found his body in the rugged terrain of the Auburn State Recreation Area.

Ian Roberts was last seen at approximately 9:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. He had apparently driven to the area alone before beginning a hike into the American River Canyon.

When Roberts failed to return home that evening, his family reported him missing early Saturday morning.

His vehicle was later located at Overlook Park in Auburn, giving investigators an important starting point for the search.

SEARCH TEAMS SPENT DAYS LOOKING THROUGH RUGGED TERRAIN

More than 100 search-and-rescue personnel joined the multi-day effort to locate Roberts.

Authorities focused heavily on the canyon area after investigators determined that he had likely parked at Overlook Park before hiking down toward the American River.
