MUM-OF-FOUR DIES IN HOUSE FIRE AS HUSBAND MAKES DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SAVE HER

MANCHESTER, UK — A mother of four died in a devastating house fire after her husband desperately tried to reach her by climbing a drainpipe and smashing through a skylight, an inquest has heard.

Kate Mulcahy, 37, was found inside the family’s £1.2 million home at Ramsden Farm in Middleton, Manchester, after the blaze broke out in the early hours of Nov. 10, 2024.

HER HUSBAND WOKE TO THE SMOKE ALARM

Kate had returned home from a friend’s baby shower at around 1:30 a.m.

Several hours later, at approximately 3:51 a.m., her husband, John Mulcahy, woke to the sound of the smoke alarm.

He quickly evacuated their twin sons and two daughters to a neighbor’s home.

But Kate was still upstairs.

She had been sleeping alone in an attic bedroom on the top floor, while John and the children were sleeping below.

HE CLIMBED ONTO THE ROOF

Unable to reach Kate from inside the burning house, John reportedly climbed a drainpipe onto the roof.

He smashed a skylight and began pulling away roof tiles in an attempt to get into the attic room.

But the flames were too intense.

He was eventually forced back.

A neighbor, Tim Ainsworth, also attempted to help after John arrived at his home in a state of panic with the children.

The neighbor tried to approach the property but was driven back by what he described as a “wall of fire.”

Firefighters later entered the property and discovered Kate’s body.

 INQUEST REVEALS WHAT HAPPENED

A post-mortem examination found that Kate died from burns and inhalation of fire fumes.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Jamie Robinson said there was no evidence of an assault, significant injury or underlying disease.

He also said Kate was likely rendered unconscious quickly, with no indication that she endured a prolonged period before losing consciousness.

 EXACT CAUSE OF FIRE REMAINS UNKNOWN

Investigators believe the fire began in the attic bedroom, but the precise cause could not be established because the room was extensively damaged.

Forensic scientist Martin Crookes said the open front door and attic bedroom door may have created a “chimney effect,” drawing oxygen into the property and intensifying the flames.

Loud bangs heard during the blaze were believed to have been caused by roof windows failing under the heat.

 CORONER RULES HER DEATH ACCIDENTAL

Police investigated the circumstances and found no evidence of suspicious activity or third-party involvement.

The coroner ultimately ruled Kate’s death accidental, while acknowledging that investigators could not establish exactly how the fire started.

The family had reportedly been experiencing relationship difficulties, and their home had recently been put on the market, but investigators found nothing connecting those circumstances to Kate’s death.

Kate’s death has left behind four children and a family struggling with an unimaginable loss.

Her final moments remain heartbreaking: while a fierce fire consumed the attic, her husband was desperately trying to reach her from the roof — but the flames proved impossible to overcome.
