Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecutors Say She Was Criminally Responsible as Testimony Ends

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial has reached a pivotal stage after prosecution experts testified that Clancy remained criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children despite suffering from mental illness.

On August 25, 2026, forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, a prosecution witness, testified that Clancy was “criminally responsible” for the deaths. He maintained that although she experienced mental health problems, she understood the difference between right and wrong and retained the ability to control her actions.

The prosecution’s final witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, testified on August 26 that Clancy knew her actions were wrong. He characterized her behavior surrounding the deaths as organized and controlled.

The prosecution’s experts directly challenged the defense’s central argument that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis and lacked criminal responsibility when her children died. Defense experts have offered a contrasting assessment of her mental state and argued that psychosis affected her ability to understand or control her actions.

Importantly, the testimony from Heilbrun and Saathoff represents the opinions of prosecution experts, not a court ruling. The jury will ultimately determine the facts and verdict based on the evidence presented at trial.
