NEPAL FLASH FLOODS LEAVE AT LEAST 160 DEAD AS HUNDREDS REMAIN MISSING

KATHMANDU, Nepal — A devastating flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border has left at least 160 people dead and hundreds more missing, as rescuers continue searching through communities devastated by torrents of water and debris.

The disaster struck along the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday, Aug. 26, sweeping through parts of Nepal’s mountainous Rasuwa region and causing widespread destruction. Authorities said the death toll had reached at least 160, while 403 people were reported missing, including 341 foreign nationals and 47 Americans.

A SUDDEN FLOOD SWEPT THROUGH THE REGION

The flooding struck with little warning, sending enormous amounts of water and debris through valleys and populated areas.

A preliminary assessment indicated that an avalanche or landslide may have blocked the river before a sudden surge was released downstream. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.

Videos from the affected region showed powerful muddy water rushing through communities, damaging buildings, roads and bridges.

Officials said the disaster also severely damaged infrastructure, including approximately 19 bridges and 40 kilometers of roads.

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ARE STILL UNACCOUNTED FOR

The number of missing people has made the rescue operation particularly challenging.

Among those reported missing are tourists, local workers and security personnel. Nepal’s tourism authorities said hundreds of foreign nationals were among those whose whereabouts were still being verified.

The situation has also affected travelers heading toward the region for religious pilgrimages, while several foreign workers at hydropower projects were reportedly stranded or unaccounted for.

Authorities have warned that the casualty figures could change as rescuers reach isolated areas and communications are restored.

RESCUE TEAMS RACE AGAINST TIME

The Nepali Army has deployed helicopters and rescue personnel to help reach people stranded by the flooding.

However, severe weather, damaged roads and high water levels have complicated rescue operations in some of the hardest-hit areas.

Neighboring countries have also offered assistance. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered intensified search-and-rescue efforts on the Chinese side of the border, while India has pledged humanitarian support to Nepal.

The United Nations has expressed condolences to those affected and said it is prepared to provide urgent assistance.

For survivors, the destruction has been overwhelming.

Entire sections of communities were damaged or swept away, while families continue waiting for information about relatives who remain unaccounted for.

The disaster has also disrupted electricity and transportation in several areas, adding another challenge for communities already dealing with the immediate aftermath.

For now, however, rescue crews remain focused on finding those who may still be alive.
