The dramatic ordeal unfolded last Friday in Hopkins County, where grandmother Clara Lutz was caring for 15-month-old Kaden and 3-month-old Dallas as severe weather moved through the area.

As the storm approached, Lutz placed both children inside the bathtub along with a blanket, pillow and Bible. She remained with them as conditions rapidly deteriorated.

Then the house began violently shaking.

Lutz said the force of the storm was so powerful that the bathtub was suddenly ripped away from her grip. She was unable to keep hold of it as the tornado tore through the property.

The grandmother was also struck in the back of the head by the bathtub’s water tank during the chaos.

When the storm passed, Lutz was confronted with a devastating scene. Much of her home had been destroyed, leaving the structure reduced essentially to its foundation.

Her first thought was finding the two children.

Lutz said she searched frantically through the debris while pleading for the babies to be returned safely.

The bathtub was eventually discovered outside the destroyed home. It had landed upside down, with the two children beneath it.

Authorities arrived at the property and helped reunite Lutz with Kaden and Dallas, turning what had appeared to be a nightmare into an astonishing rescue.

The younger child, Dallas, suffered a significant bump to the back of his head during the incident. Lutz said doctors also determined that he had bleeding in his brain, prompting a transfer to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for treatment.

By the time Lutz reached the hospital, however, she said the bleeding had stopped.

The survival of both children came as a remarkable piece of good news following the destruction left behind by the tornado.

Lutz said the children’s parents live elsewhere in Hopkins County, toward the northern part of the area. Their home reportedly escaped most of the storm’s damage, adding another extraordinary detail to the family’s experience.

For Lutz, the moments immediately following the tornado were filled with fear as she searched through the wreckage for the children she had been protecting.

The bathtub that had served as their shelter ultimately became a crucial part of their survival, despite being violently carried away from the house.

The incident highlights the unpredictable and destructive power of tornadoes, which can transform homes and belongings into dangerous debris within moments.

But for one Kentucky family, the aftermath also brought an extraordinary outcome: Two very young children were found alive after being carried away inside the bathtub where their grandmother had placed them for protection.

What began as a frantic struggle against the storm ended with the children being located and reunited with their family — a stunning survival story amid widespread destruction.
