A 21-year-old man is critically injured after falling from a popular rooftop bar.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, the Columbia Police Department responded to reports that an individual had fallen from the rooftop bar at Harpo’s Bar and Grill around 9:05 p.m. local time, police confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

Following the incident, the individual was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. University of Missouri Health Care told PEOPLE that the individual, who has since been identified as 21-year-old Corbin Rodenberg, remains in critical condition.

Rodenberg’s mom, Kaley, shared on social media that the recent University of Missouri student was on a ventilator after suffering multiple skull fractures and various broken bones.

“He is currently having a brain procedure to hopefully help and get some answers. It’s a waiting game right now,” she wrote. “Parents hug your babies tight and everyone please send up some thoughts and prayers for my baby and those working on him.”

The following day, she shared in an update that, while he “remains unconscious and unable to give any verbal cues,” there have been “a few small miraculous glimmers of positive signs.”

“In this nightmare of unknowns and continuous waiting, I’m able to find comfort in the people coming forward to tell me how kind Corbin is and how much he has made an impact on their lives,” she wrote. “Corbin has been searching for his parth in life but the one constant he always held to and what he would always tell me is, ‘Mom I just want to find something where I can help someone and make a positive impact that makes a difference.’ ”

According to ABC affiliate KMIZ, Corbin was a former student at the University of Missouri and a 2023 graduate of Chillicothe High School, where he played football.

“Our thoughts are with former Mizzou student Corbin Rodenberg and his family,” the university said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

Andrew Staphs, who was at the bar when the incident occurred, alleged to the outlet that a security guard asked Corbin to get off the railing shortly before he fell.

“I saw lights and heard sirens and I looked back over, and I saw them doing whatever they could, the first people on the scene,” he recalled. “It was really graphic. I got a glimpse of it, and I can like picture what I saw perfectly in my head, even though I only glimpsed at it. Then I made my way downstairs with a police officer and then who I presume to be three friends of the person who fell.”

Brody Ryan, a college senior who lives across the street from the bar, told CBS affiliate KRCG that Harpo’s is a “staple and part of the Mizzou culture.”

“Hundreds of people are here all the time. It never had anything like it,” he said. “It definitely is kind of a shock since school is starting today.”

After the incident, Harpo’s Bar and Grill told KMIZ that they are joining the “entire community as our hearts go out to the young man for his recovery.”

A GoFundMe has since been created to support Corbin and his mother “who will undoubtedly not leave his side.”
