Clarkson said she quickly realized Josephine had four bloody puncture wounds on her head, which she described as looking “like a dog had bitten a football.”

She grabbed the infant and chased the fox toward the top of the stairs before rushing to check on her 1-year-old daughter, who was sleeping in another room.

Clarkson had left the back door of the family’s home open before the incident.

Josephine was rushed to Watford General Hospital, where doctors determined that she had not suffered any skull fractures or injuries to her brain.

“I was very lucky that we came away with just needing some tetanus shots and some antibiotics,” Clarkson said.

She believes the position she and Josephine were sleeping in may have protected the baby from even more serious injuries, and she speculated that the animal may have been attempting to pull the infant away.

The incident has left Clarkson shaken and fearful about allowing her young daughters near open doors or into the family’s garden.

“I feel absolutely violated,” she said. “I don’t feel safe in my home with two young children.”

Clarkson added that she is concerned foxes in her neighborhood have become increasingly comfortable around humans.

“Clearly there is an issue of either the same fox or multiple foxes being fed or just really acclimatizing and becoming comfortable with people,” she said.

Surveillance footage taken in the family’s backyard also captured what they believe was the fox roaming around shortly before the incident.

Clarkson additionally said they spotted another fox — possibly the same animal — approaching them near their front door and appearing to try to enter as they rushed Josephine to the hospital.

Clarkson said she reported the attack to Watford Borough Council and began looking into ways to keep foxes away from the property. She said one option offered to the family involved repellent pellets costing about $400.

The Watford Borough Council did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Trevor Williams, founder of the U.K.-based red fox conservation group The Fox Project, said that incidents involving foxes and humans are extremely rare, and said the organization had not heard of a similar case in more than a decade, per SWNS.

“It’s pretty clear to me that this incident involves a young cub,” Williams said.

“Experienced adult foxes would never behave in this way and will always avoid putting themselves in such a vulnerable position,” he continued.
