East Oakland Stabbings Leave One Dead and Four Injured in Apparent Random Attack

A series of seemingly random stabbings across East Oakland left one person dead and four others injured during a violent spree that unfolded over approximately 30 minutes.

The attacks occurred at multiple locations in the East Oakland area, prompting a major police response.

The deceased victim was identified as 58-year-old Gonsalo Lopez, a local chef remembered by his family and community for frequently bringing home-cooked meals to homeless people at Cesar Chavez Park.

Four other people were injured in the attacks, with one surviving victim reportedly in critical condition.

Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Jose Jesus Rodriguez, who was arrested in connection with the violence.

Rodriguez has been charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators said Rodriguez acted alone and that the victims appeared to have been selected at random, rather than targeted because of a known personal connection.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attacks, including what may have motivated the violence.

The charges are allegations, and Rodriguez remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
