“HE WAS JUST A CHILD…” — MUM DEMANDS ANSWERS AFTER AUTISTIC TEEN COLLAPSES AND DIES FOLLOWING POLICE VISIT

A grieving mother is demanding answers after her 14-year-old autistic son, who had a heart condition, collapsed and died shortly after police officers arrived at the family home.

Leo Gurr was at home in Southampton on June 21 when officers came to the property as part of enquiries into an unrelated assault investigation.

His mother, Shannon, claims the teenager became frightened when officers knocked on the door and windows and called his name.

She says Leo panicked and ran from the house barefoot.

A MOTHER’S HEARTBREAK

According to Shannon, Leo had previously been diagnosed with a heart condition and also had autism and ADHD.

She believes the sudden panic may have placed enormous stress on her son.

More than an hour after he ran from the property, Leo was found collapsed in a cut-through close to his home.

Paramedics attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A formal coroner’s inquest is being prepared to establish the precise medical cause of his death.

“I JUST WANT THE FULL PICTURE”

Shannon has questioned the way officers approached the house.

She also claims she later saw body-worn camera footage showing officers at the property before the cameras were switched off as Leo fled.

Her family is now seeking a complete account of what happened during those crucial minutes.

For a mother who says her son was particularly vulnerable to stress, the unanswered questions have made the loss even harder to process.

POLICE SAY NO MISCONDUCT WAS FOUND

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary conducted an internal review following Leo’s death.

According to the force, the review found no evidence of criminality or misconduct by the officers involved.

The case was also referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which agreed with the conclusion that no further investigation or action was required.

However, the internal review did identify learning points for two officers, with additional training provided as part of their professional development.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION REMAINS

Leo’s family is still waiting for the coroner’s investigation to establish exactly what caused his death.

Until that process is complete, it remains unclear what role, if any, the events at the family home played in his collapse.

For Shannon, however, the pain is already permanent.

She is not simply asking why her son died.

She wants to know exactly what happened during the final moments before he ran from home — and whether anything could have been done differently.
