Saylor Hayes Autopsy Shows Pulmonary Edema as Parents Face Child Endangerment Charges

Five-year-old Saylor Hayes was found dead in a body of water near Pawleys Island, South Carolina, on August 31, 2026, one day after she was reported missing.

A preliminary autopsy has revealed that Saylor suffered from pulmonary edema, a condition involving fluid buildup in the lungs. The finding is consistent with drowning, but authorities have not yet officially determined her cause or manner of death.

The examination reportedly found no obvious signs of external or internal trauma. Additional forensic testing is still underway, and officials expect the final report to take approximately eight to 10 weeks.

Parents Extradited to South Carolina

Saylor’s parents, John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were extradited to South Carolina on September 4 after being arrested in Tennessee three days earlier.

Both parents currently face charges of unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child. The charges remain allegations, and the investigation is ongoing.

Investigators are also examining why Saylor was not wearing her Project Lifesaver tracking device when she disappeared. The tracking device was later found inside a vehicle at the family’s home in Virginia.

Project Lifesaver technology is designed to help authorities locate individuals who may be at risk of wandering or becoming lost, making the circumstances surrounding the missing device a significant part of the investigation.

Bond Hearing Scheduled

A bond hearing for Saylor’s parents is scheduled for the morning of September 5, 2026, in Georgetown County.

Authorities have not yet released a final determination regarding how Saylor died. Until the remaining forensic testing is completed, investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, the tracking device and the events leading up to her death.

The final autopsy report, expected in roughly eight to 10 weeks, could provide additional answers for investigators and Saylor’s family.
