Spencer Korwin, a former Team USA triathlete and dad of two, has died after drowning during a family trip at New York’s Shelter Island. He was 38.

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, Korwin’s body was found by divers around 3 p.m. after he had gone missing that morning while swimming off The Pridwin Hotel dock, police confirmed to PEOPLE.

Prior to his death, Korwin was staying at the hotel with his family when he decided to go out for a morning swim, authorities said. When he didn’t return hours later, his wife notified hotel staff, who then contacted emergency services.

Korwin’s body was found after an hours-long search focusing on the Crescent Beach-North Channel area and its surrounding waterways. In addition to Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services’ two ambulances and several EMS volunteers, marine and air units were deployed to assist in the search.

Shelter Island Police Department Det. Sgt. Jack Thilberg said that Korwin’s drowning is believed to be accidental, though the investigation remains ongoing.

“There wasn’t anything unusual,” John Kirincic, a master mariner for the Southold Town Police Department’s Marine One, told the Shelter Island Reporter of that day’s weather conditions. “There was no fog or anything bad.”

Even so, he explained that the current in the area is often strong due to the narrow passage where the tide flows.

Korwin received his degree from Syracuse University in 2010 before going on to compete for Team USA in the sport of triathlon, according to SportsLab. He had also been a Gatorade-sponsored athlete since 2012.

Korwin’s funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, at Temple Israel. He will be buried at Beth Moses Jewish Cemetery in West Babylon.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1.
