NHL prospect Matthew Mayich suffered a heat stroke and lost oxygen to his brain when he collapsed during a military-style outdoor workout, according to his family’s lawyer.

Rob Carey, the attorney representing the family of the 21-year-old Arizona State University hockey player who was drafted by the St. Louis Blues, told ESPN, “This injury is from exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain.”

“There were no other contributing conditions, only exertion-related heat. This is not an induced coma,” Carey told the outlet, adding, “We need a miracle.”

The attorney emphasized in his statement to ESPN that Mayich “didn’t last one day” after his arrival to ASU and said the Aug. 20 workout when he collapsed “was the first day of coach-led practice.”

Mayich remains in the hospital with “zero chance of recovery,” Mayich previously told the Arizona Republic.

The workout was reportedly led by a former military service member who had volunteered to lead the team’s exercises, per NBC affiliate 12 News.

Carey told ESPN that Mayich became disoriented and dizzy in the moments before he collapsed on the track. The athlete was also given “minimal water” during the workout, which took place while Arizona was under an extreme heat warning, according to a local weather report.

On Saturday, Sept. 5, the university’s hockey team broke their silence in a statement on X and Instagram, writing, “Thinking of you 27.”

“Matthew — your ASU teammates and the entire Sun Devil community are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement concluded.

The Sun Devils turned off their comments on Instagram, and only one reply remains visible on X, which reads, “About 2 weeks too late….”

Carey said to The Athletic on Sept. 1 that the school mishandled the investigation into Mayich’s medical emergency, and argued that members of the Sun Devil coaching staff should be placed on administrative leave, citing it was “routine procedure” as the investigation continues.

“It’s very clear to me that this is a time when adults have to do the right thing — sometimes the right thing is the hard thing — and from everything I can tell and the leads we have, ASU is not handling this responsibly,” Carey said, according to The Athletic.
