Neil Patrick Harris Says He’s ‘Forever Grateful’ for Husband David Burtka as They Celebrate 12 Years of Marriage

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are celebrating 12 years of marriage.
In honor of their 12th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 6, the How I Met Your Mother star, 53, and his husband, 51, shared heartfelt tributes to each other on social media.
“12 years ago today,” Harris wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the couple tasting their wedding cake during their private wedding in Italy in 2014. Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This” played in the background.
He continued, “David, thanks for saying ‘I do.’ I’m forever grateful that you did. @dbelicious ❤️ #anniversary ❤️.”

Burtka marked their marriage milestone in his own Instagram post. “12 years today I said I do! Wow- 12 years have flown by. I couldn’t be happier with anyone else by my side. I love you @nph,” Burtka wrote alongside a solo shot of his husband smiling outside.
The pair also shared a fan-made Instagram reel of compiled photos from their long-lasting romance set to Olivia Dean‘s “So Easy (To Fall in Love)” on their Instagram Stories. “12 years married today!!” Burtka added onscreen.

The couple met back in 2004 and later began dating. They kept their relationship under wraps until they made their red carpet debut at the Emmys in 2007. Six years into their relationship, Harris and Burtka announced they were going to be parents and went on to welcome their now 15-year-old fraternal twins, Harper and Gideon, via surrogate in October 2010.
Following the 2011 ruling that legalized gay marriage in New York, the couple announced their engagement, and got married in 2014.
Harris and Burtka said “I do” wearing custom Tom Ford tuxedos. Their close friend and longtime director of How I Met Your Mother, Pam Fryman, officiated the ceremony. Also taking part in the celebration were the couple’s twins, who were 3 at the time. One highlight of the festive evening was a special performance at the reception by Elton John.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in April 2019, Harris revealed that the key to keeping his marriage strong is perseverance.
“I think the secret to a relationship is just perseverance, you know?” the Gone Girl star said. “It’s not always pretty … but he’s (David Burtka) pretty, so it makes it easy.”
