67-Year-Old Passenger Arrested After Disruptive Outburst Forces American Airlines Flight Diversion

A 67-year-old Arizona man has been arrested after allegedly causing a violent disturbance aboard an American Airlines flight that was forced to divert to Baltimore.

The passenger was identified as Arthur Layne Lundeen, 67, of Tucson, Arizona. The incident occurred on September 3, 2026, aboard American Airlines Flight 618, which was traveling from Dallas–Fort Worth to Newark.

According to witnesses and case records, Lundeen allegedly became increasingly disruptive during the flight. He reportedly used profanity and made racist and homophobic remarks before allegedly assaulting another passenger.

As the situation escalated, several passengers intervened and attempted to restrain him. Witnesses said Lundeen continued resisting, prompting passengers to use zip ties and tape to secure him to his seat.

Because of the disturbance, the flight was diverted to Baltimore, where law enforcement officers boarded the aircraft after it landed.

Lundeen was subsequently arrested and faces state charges including second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. The FBI is also investigating the incident and could pursue additional federal charges.

The incident has drawn attention because passengers themselves became involved in restraining the alleged aggressor during the flight. Their actions allowed the aircraft to land safely while authorities were contacted.

Meanwhile, Lundeen’s former employer has distanced itself from him following the arrest.

Long Realty, a Tucson-based real estate firm where Lundeen previously worked, confirmed that it has severed ties with him. The company said Lundeen is no longer authorized to represent Long Realty.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the passenger’s behavior remain under investigation. Federal authorities are expected to determine whether the incident violated federal laws governing conduct aboard commercial aircraft.

The charges against Lundeen are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
