5-Year-Old Alabama Boy Meets Bone Marrow Donor Who Helped Save His Life

A 5-year-old Alabama boy has shared an emotional first meeting with the woman who donated the bone marrow that helped give him a chance at a healthier future.

Dewontis “Junior” Groomster Jr., known as Junior, suffers from Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the immune system and the body’s ability to properly control bleeding.

As part of his treatment, Junior eventually required a bone marrow transplant. His donor was Carolyn Daniels, a woman from Oklahoma who stepped forward to donate and help a child she had never met.

Recently, Junior and Daniels finally met in person for the first time at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.

The meeting marked an extraordinary moment for both the young patient and the woman whose donation became such an important part of his medical journey.

Daniels said that although she had never met Junior before, she felt an unexpected sense of familiarity when they finally came face-to-face. She shared that it felt as though she already knew him.
