QIAN HONGYAN: THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF CHINA’S “FISH GIRL”

At just four years old, Qian Hongyan experienced a life-altering tragedy when a heavy truck struck her along a road outside Zhuangshang Village in Luliang County, Yunnan. The devastating accident claimed the life of her friend and left Qian with severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of both her legs below the pelvis. In a rural community with limited medical and financial resources, her future seemed unimaginably difficult, but her family found a unique way to help her move: placing her upper body inside a cut-out basketball and giving her two wooden handles to propel herself forward.

This makeshift solution earned her international attention as the “Basketball Girl.” Despite the immense physical limitations and public curiosity surrounding her condition, Qian refused to let tragedy define her life. Her resilience drew the interest of local sports organizations, leading her to join China’s first national swimming club for people with disabilities. Transitioning from a basketball to the swimming pool was an extraordinary challenge, as moving through water without legs requires immense core strength, stamina, and precise balance.

Through relentless discipline, daily endurance training, and unwavering determination, Qian mastered the water, earning the affectionate nickname “Fish Girl.” She went on to represent China on the international stage, competing in prestigious events such as the Paralympic Games and winning national gold medals. Her transformation from a young girl navigating life on a basketball to an elite athlete highlights the incredible strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity.
