HE RAN TOWARD THE DANGER TO PROTECT CHILDREN — KAYLUB GIAMANCO’S COURAGEOUS ACT DURING THE OREGON SCHOOL SHOOTING
A father was on his lunch break when he heard gunfire near the elementary school attended by his daughters. What happened next would leave him at the centre of a tragedy — and a community grateful that someone intervened.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, was driving home during his lunch break on October 15, 2026, when a shooting unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.
His two daughters attended the school. When he saw the armed teenager entering the building, he made a split-second decision to follow him inside.
According to police, Giamanco pursued the 16-year-old suspect into a classroom, where a teacher was already trying to stop the attacker. Giamanco then used his legally owned handgun to shoot the teenager, who died at the scene.
His intervention brought the attack to an end before responding officers arrived inside the school.
Four lives were lost
Despite the efforts of people who confronted the attacker, the tragedy had already taken an unbearable toll.
Three children — aged 5, 8 and 11 — and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert died. Two other people, including a seven-year-old child and another teacher, were critically injured.
The deaths have devastated families and shaken the community of Bend, where students, parents and school staff are now confronting the aftermath of an unimaginable day.
A teacher also stepped forward
Police said Giamanco was not the only person who tried to stop the attack.
Inside the classroom, a teacher threw her cellphone at the suspect and physically confronted him. Authorities praised the actions of school staff who attempted to protect the children in their care.
Their actions underline the courage shown by several people during the emergency — including educators who faced immediate danger while trying to shield their students.
“He wasn’t looking for recognition”
Giamanco’s family has described the emotional toll of the incident and said he was not seeking praise or public attention. Instead, he wanted to express gratitude to the first responders, school staff and community members who offered support after the tragedy.
For a father whose own children attended the school, the experience was deeply personal. His decision to intervene unfolded in a matter of moments, amid confusion and fear.
Police have confirmed the sequence of events, while the investigation into the attack — including how the teenager obtained the shotgun and what motivated him — continues.
A community left grieving
The courage shown that afternoon cannot undo the loss of four lives. Families are mourning children whose futures were cut short, and a teacher remembered for her commitment to her students.
But Giamanco’s intervention, alongside the efforts of the teacher who confronted the attacker, has become an important part of the story of how the violence was stopped.
One father acted while his daughters’ school was in danger. Teachers fought to protect the children entrusted to them. First responders rushed toward the emergency.
Their actions deserve recognition, even as the community continues to grieve those who did not make it home.
May the four victims be remembered with love, and may the injured children, educators and everyone affected find the support they need in the days ahead.
