DAD, 58, DIES AFTER BEING FOUND FACE-DOWN IN CRUISE SHIP POOL WHILE CELEBRATING HIS SON’S WEDDING

Stephen Junker had traveled to Italy for a celebration with his family. Weeks later, his loved ones were saying goodbye after a devastating accident aboard the cruise ship.

Stephen Junker, a 58-year-old Minnesota pastor, has died after suffering a catastrophic spinal cord injury aboard a cruise ship while celebrating his son’s wedding in Italy.

Junker was injured on August 16 aboard the Sun Princess, operated by Princess Cruises. According to his family, he fell into the ship’s pool and was found face down and unresponsive, having nearly drowned.

He was rushed by the Italian Coast Guard to a hospital in Naples, where doctors placed him in intensive care and on a ventilator.

A Celebration Turns Into a Medical Emergency

What began as a family trip to celebrate a wedding suddenly became a desperate fight for Junker’s life.

Doctors determined that he had suffered severe compression of his spinal cord at the C3-C4 level of his neck. Emergency spinal surgery was performed the following day.

His family was later told that, if he survived, he would be quadriplegic and would likely remain dependent on a ventilator.

Junker also developed a multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in his lungs, which his family said was likely related to the near-drowning.

Brought Back to Minnesota

After receiving treatment in Italy, Junker was transported back to the United States on August 23 and transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

His family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with his medical and transportation expenses. The fundraiser eventually surpassed its original $30,000 goal, reaching nearly $35,000.

But despite extensive medical care, his injuries proved too severe.

On September 4, Junker’s daughter Elizabeth shared the devastating news that her father had died.

“At 6:33 PM today, Steve went to be with Jesus,” the family wrote in an update to the fundraiser, adding that he was surrounded by his wife, children, parents and friends.

The family said further diagnostic testing had revealed injuries that were not treatable.

Remembered as a Pastor and Father

Junker had served as pastor of Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, Minnesota, for nearly a decade.

Before entering the ministry, he earned a pharmacy degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He later attended Lutheran Brethren Seminary as he pursued his calling as a pastor.

His obituary described him as being known for his animated sermons, his love of conversation and his readiness to help people in need.

For his congregation, his death marked the loss of a longtime spiritual leader.

For his family, it was the loss of a husband, father and grandfather.

Junker is survived by his wife, five children, grandson Jonah, parents, sister and extended family.

A Wedding Trip That Ended in Tragedy

There is a heartbreaking contrast at the center of Junker’s story.

He traveled to Italy to celebrate his son’s wedding — a moment that should have become a treasured family memory.

Instead, August 16 became the beginning of a three-week medical ordeal spanning two countries.

His family remained by his side through emergency surgery in Italy, the journey back to Minnesota and treatment at Mayo Clinic.

On September 4, that fight ended.

Junker died surrounded by the people closest to him.

His visitation and funeral service are scheduled for September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, where he served his community for years.

For those who knew him, Stephen Junker’s final days will be remembered not simply for the tragedy aboard a cruise ship, but for the life he spent serving his family, his congregation and the people around him.
