ISABELLE WELSH WAS ONLY TWO — THEN THE WARNING SIGNS BEGAN TO PILE UP

She was only two years old.

Isabelle Rose Welsh should have been growing up, playing, laughing and discovering the world around her.

Instead, in the weeks before her death, prosecutors said she endured a devastating campaign of abuse that left her with 21 broken bones and extensive bruising.

And now, after her mother and her mother’s boyfriend were convicted and sentenced to life in prison, another question has emerged:

Could Isabelle have been protected before it was too late?

A CHILD WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN HURT

Isabelle collapsed at her home in Thornaby, Teesside, on September 13, 2025.

She was critically injured and rushed to hospital.

Doctors could not save her.

She died in the early hours of September 14 from a catastrophic head injury.

But the injuries discovered after her death revealed something much larger.

Isabelle had suffered fractures to 21 bones in the weeks before she died, while her body showed extensive bruising consistent with repeated physical trauma.

Prosecutors described her death as the final stage of a prolonged “campaign of violence.”

Her mother, Alexandra Walker, and Walker’s boyfriend, Harrison Simpson, were both accused of being responsible.

Both denied the charges.

The jury ultimately found them guilty.

THE BROKEN LEG THAT CAME BEFORE

One of the most disturbing details emerged from what happened just days before Isabelle’s final collapse.

Walker had taken her daughter to hospital after Isabelle suffered a fractured leg.

The explanation given for the injury was that the toddler had hurt herself in her cot.

But prosecutors later argued that the injury was not an innocent accident.

Isabelle was returned to her mother’s care.

Less than two weeks later, she would suffer the catastrophic head injury that ended her life.

THEN THERE WAS THE 999 DELAY

On the day Isabelle collapsed, prosecutors said Walker did not immediately call emergency services.

The court heard that Walker searched online for answers about why her toddler was bleeding.

She reportedly searched questions including why a toddler might have blood in their stool.

Yet, according to the prosecution, she still did not immediately seek emergency help.

Her stepfather eventually arrived and told her to call 999.

Paramedics reached the home within minutes.

By then, Isabelle was critically ill.

She died in hospital the following day.

THE WARNING THAT NEVER LED TO AN ARREST

Perhaps the most haunting development came after the trial.

Harrison Simpson had previously been the subject of a non-molestation order.

An arrest warrant was issued in March 2024 after he allegedly breached that order.

But Cleveland Police failed to execute the warrant.

Simpson was not arrested for the breach.

Around 18 months later, he was in a relationship with Alexandra Walker and had become part of Isabelle’s life.

In September 2025, Isabelle died.

Following the convictions, Cleveland Police acknowledged the failure and launched a review of its procedures.

TWO LIFE SENTENCES

On July 28, 2026, a jury convicted Simpson and Walker of murdering Isabelle.

Simpson was also convicted of sexual assault by penetration and child cruelty.

Walker was convicted of murder and child cruelty but cleared of the sexual-assault charge.

Two days later, both were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Simpson must serve a minimum of 27 years and 231 days.

Walker must serve a minimum of 21 years and 48 days.

The judge described the abuse as deeply disturbing, while police called it one of the worst cases they had investigated.

“SHE SHOULD HAVE HAD HER WHOLE LIFE AHEAD OF HER”

Isabelle’s family later said she should have had her entire life ahead of her.

Instead, that future was taken away.

Her story has now become more than a devastating criminal case.

It has also raised difficult questions about the warning signs that appeared before her death — the injuries, the hospital visit, the concerns surrounding Simpson, and the arrest warrant that was never executed.

For Isabelle, there was no second chance.

But the questions surrounding what happened before September 14, 2025 may continue long after the courtroom has fallen silent.
