MUM, 21, AND HER 5-YEAR-OLD SON KILLED ALONGSIDE BOYFRIEND AS LANDSLIDE BURIED THEIR HOME

A young mother, her five-year-old son and her boyfriend were found buried beneath mud and debris after a devastating landslide tore through their home during a violent storm in southern Brazil.

A family was sleeping together when disaster struck.

Jaqueline Lima, 21, her five-year-old son Vinicius Lima, and her boyfriend Kauan da Silva, 21, were killed after a landslide slammed into their home in Ponta Grossa, in Brazil’s Paraná state.

The tragedy unfolded on Thursday morning as severe storms battered the region, bringing intense rainfall and triggering flooding and landslides.

According to reports, the family were sleeping in the same bed when the hillside gave way.

LANDSLIDE STRUCK WITHOUT WARNING

The devastating incident happened in the Ronda neighborhood of Ponta Grossa at around 8:44 a.m.

Heavy rain caused part of the hillside to collapse, sending a huge amount of mud and debris into the property.

The force of the landslide destroyed part of the home, bringing down a wall and sections of the roof.

Emergency crews were quickly sent to the scene, with around 10 firefighters involved in the rescue operation.

But rescuers first had to stabilize the damaged structure because of fears that another collapse could occur.

Only after the building was made safer could crews enter and search through the wreckage.

A FAMILY FOUND TOGETHER

Jaqueline, Vinicius and Kauan were eventually located beneath the debris.

Emergency workers attempted to revive them, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fact that the young family had been sleeping together when the landslide struck has added another heartbreaking dimension to the tragedy.

Vinicius was just five years old.

His mother Jaqueline was only 21, the same age as her boyfriend Kauan.

Their lives were suddenly cut short by a disaster that unfolded within minutes.

STORMS BRING WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION

The landslide was part of a much wider weather emergency across Paraná.

Heavy storms caused flooding and flash floods in several municipalities, while authorities confirmed two tornadoes in the state within roughly 24 hours.

One tornado was reported near Francisco Alves, while another struck the community of Boa Vista in Espigão Alto do Iguaçu.

At the height of the storms, more than 22,000 properties were left without electricity, according to power company Copel.

The extreme weather has raised fresh concerns about the dangers posed by intense rainfall, particularly in densely built-up areas where water can struggle to drain away.

MORE EXTREME WEATHER FEARED

The tragedy comes as Brazil prepares for what forecasters warn could be a period of increasingly severe weather associated with El Niño.

Authorities have warned of further torrential rainfall and flooding in the months ahead.

The latest disaster also follows devastating flooding earlier this year in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, where at least 59 people were reported killed and hundreds of residents required rescue.

For one family in Ponta Grossa, however, the storm has already brought an unimaginable loss.

A mother, her young son and the man she loved were all together when the earth gave way beneath their home — leaving a family and community to mourn three lives lost in a matter of moments.
