A community in Sunderland is mourning the loss of three teenagers after a car crashed through a barrier and plunged into the River Wear.

Their deaths have left families and friends facing an unimaginable loss as tributes begin to appear beside the river.

A TRAGEDY BY THE RIVER

Emergency services were called shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday following reports that a black Audi A3 had left the road near Wearmouth Bridge and entered the River Wear.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene, with police, coastguard teams, RNLI rescuers and other emergency personnel searching the water.

The operation continued as stunned onlookers gathered on both sides of the river.

Police identified the victims as Zara Shaw, from Houghton-le-Spring, and Luke Etheridge and Jackson Duke, both from the Sunderland area.

Zara was just 16.

Luke was also 16.

Jackson was 17.

All three were still teenagers, with years ahead of them.

Their families are now being supported by specially trained officers as they come to terms with the tragedy.

ONE TEENAGER SURVIVED

Another 17-year-old boy was inside the vehicle when it entered the river.

He managed to escape and suffered injuries that were described as non-serious.

Police subsequently arrested him on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remained in police custody while investigators worked to establish exactly what happened.

Police said no other vehicles are currently believed to have been involved.

As news of the deaths spread, flowers and other tributes were left near the scene.

Among them were floral arrangements and a small plush toy, quiet reminders of three young people whose lives ended suddenly.

Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie said the families of Luke, Jackson and Zara had endured “unimaginable agony and heartbreak.”

He described the teenagers as having had their whole futures ahead of them and asked the public to respect the privacy of their loved ones.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the Audi leaving the road.

Officers have asked anyone who witnessed what happened — particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage — to come forward.

Authorities have also urged people not to speculate about the incident on social media while the investigation continues, noting the potential impact on the victims’ families.

For now, the focus remains on the three families facing an unimaginable goodbye.

Zara, Luke and Jackson were teenagers who should have had decades ahead of them. Instead, their names now stand together in a heartbreaking tragedy beside the River Wear.
