WADE WILSON CASE UPDATE: STATE EXPERT SAYS “DEADPOOL KILLER” HAS A STRUCTURALLY NORMAL BRAIN
Conflicting medical testimony is once again at the center of Wade Wilson’s case as his defense argues that possible brain abnormalities should be considered in determining whether he should face the death penalty.
STATE EXPERT CHALLENGES DEFENSE BRAIN-DAMAGE CLAIM
A key issue in the Wade Wilson case has focused on what was — and was not — found in the convicted killer’s brain scans.
During a sentencing hearing, defense neurologist Dr. Mark Rubino testified that Wilson’s brain images and results from cognitive testing could indicate brain damage affecting executive functioning and impulse control.
Rubino argued that such impairments could potentially help explain Wilson’s impulsive behavior and should be considered as mitigating evidence when determining his punishment.
But a medical expert testifying for the state reached a very different conclusion.
Dr. Thomas Coyne testified that his review of Wilson’s brain scans showed no structural defects, including no significant asymmetry or apparent frontal-lobe impairment. He characterized the brain as structurally normal.
TWO EXPERTS, TWO VERY DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS
The conflicting testimony has become an important part of the debate over Wilson’s sentence.
The defense has sought to present evidence of mental-health and neurological problems as mitigating circumstances. The argument is not that such evidence would erase the convictions, but that it could affect whether the ultimate punishment should be death.
The state, meanwhile, challenged the interpretation that Wilson suffered from a significant structural brain abnormality.
Coyne also rejected the idea that violent criminal behavior necessarily requires an identifiable physical abnormality in the brain, according to trial coverage.
The disagreement illustrates why brain scans alone can become complicated evidence in criminal sentencing: experts may examine the same medical information but reach different conclusions about its significance.
WILSON WAS ALREADY SENTENCED TO DEATH
Wilson was convicted in 2024 of murdering Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz, two Florida women killed in October 2019.
During the penalty phase, jurors recommended death for both murders — voting 9-3 in the Melton case and 10-2 in the Ruiz case.
Judge Nicholas Thompson ultimately imposed two death sentences, finding that the aggravating circumstances outweighed the mitigating evidence presented by the defense.
Wilson has continued to challenge his convictions and death sentence through the appeals process. The Florida court system shows his case has proceeded through appellate review, including oral arguments before the Florida Supreme Court in 2026.
WHY THE BRAIN EVIDENCE MATTERS
The defense’s focus on Wilson’s neurological condition reflects a broader question in death-penalty cases: whether a defendant’s mental or neurological impairments should reduce the weight given to aggravating circumstances.
For Wilson, the defense has argued that evidence involving his mental health, cognitive functioning and possible brain abnormalities should be considered before the state carries out the ultimate punishment.
The prosecution’s experts have disputed that interpretation.
That leaves the court to weigh competing medical opinions alongside the extensive evidence already presented in the case.
THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT
The latest brain testimony does not mean that Wilson has been found free of every mental-health problem.
Rather, the state expert’s testimony specifically challenged the claim that his brain scans demonstrated a significant structural abnormality.
That distinction is important as Wilson continues his legal fight.
For now, the case remains a battle not only over what happened in 2019, but also over how the courts should interpret the medical evidence surrounding the man convicted of the two murders.
Wilson remains under a death sentence while his legal proceedings continue.
