THE BABY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN HIS CARE

Police said officers responded to a reported disturbance in the 800 block of Harrison Avenue in Central City at around 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, September 12.

When officers arrived, Grayson’s father reportedly told them that his baby had been left with Mayes while he was at work.

But investigators soon faced a troubling question:

According to police, Mayes initially told investigators that a family friend had picked the baby up at around 10 p.m. the previous night.

Officers contacted the woman.

She denied taking Grayson.

A RELATIVE GAVE INVESTIGATORS ANOTHER CLUE

As officers continued searching for answers, a relative reportedly told investigators that they had last seen Grayson with Mayes at a residence on Hillview Street in Cleaton on Friday.

Police then obtained search warrants for properties connected to the investigation.

At the Harrison Avenue location, investigators reported finding suspected methamphetamine.

Then they searched a home in the 300 block of Hillview Street.

That’s where police made the heartbreaking discovery.

Grayson was found dead inside the home.

MAYES NOW FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES

Mayes was arrested and taken to the Muhlenberg County Detention Center.

Authorities say he faces charges of:

• Murder
• First-degree criminal abuse
• Tampering with physical evidence
• Abuse of a corpse
• First-degree possession of a controlled substance

The Sun reported that Mayes is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.

Police have not publicly released the cause or manner of Grayson’s death.
