4-YEAR-OLD GUS LAMONT VANISHED FROM HIS RURAL HOME — POLICE NOW HAVE A SUSPECT

Four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote rural property in Australia months ago. Now, investigators say the case has taken a major turn.

Gus was last seen on September 27, 2025, at Oak Park Station, a remote sheep property in South Australia, about 25 miles from the town of Yunta.

The little boy had reportedly been playing in a sand area near the family property when he suddenly disappeared.

Despite an enormous search operation involving police, emergency services, military personnel, Indigenous trackers and community volunteers, Gus has not been found.

Now, investigators say they believe his disappearance may not have been a case of the child simply wandering away.

POLICE NAME A SUSPECT

In February 2026, South Australia Police announced that Gus’ disappearance had been declared a major crime.

Detectives revealed that a person who lived at Oak Park Station had stopped cooperating with investigators and was now considered a suspect in Gus’ disappearance.

Authorities stressed that Gus’ parents are not suspects.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said investigators had identified inconsistencies and discrepancies while examining the movements of people at the property around the time Gus disappeared.

Police also said the person now considered a suspect was known to the child.

However, investigators have not publicly announced that the person has been charged, and being considered a suspect does not establish criminal responsibility.

THE SEARCH FOR GUS

The search for the little boy has been massive.

According to South Australia Police, the operation involved 163 SAPOL personnel and approximately 230 additional resources, including emergency-service personnel, Australian Defence Force members, an Indigenous tracker and community volunteers.

Investigators searched a vast area surrounding Oak Park Station.

The search included three dams and six mine shafts within a 10-kilometer radius of the homestead, along with surrounding land and areas of an adjacent national park.

Authorities also conducted extensive aerial searches.

But despite the scale of the operation, investigators said they had found no physical or other evidence indicating that Gus simply wandered away from the property.

POLICE ALSO INVESTIGATED AN ABDUCTION THEORY

Investigators have been examining more than one possible explanation for Gus’ disappearance.

According to police, Task Force Horizon conducted two investigations at the same time.

One focused on the possibility that Gus had been abducted by an unknown person.

The other examined whether someone known to Gus could have been involved in his disappearance.

Police have since said they found no evidence suggesting Gus was abducted by an unknown person.

That development shifted the focus of the investigation toward people who were known to the child and had access to the property.

SEARCH WARRANTS AND ITEMS SEIZED

In January 2026, investigators executed a search warrant at Oak Park Station.

Police seized several items during the search, including a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices.

Authorities said the items would form part of the ongoing investigation as detectives continued trying to establish exactly what happened around the time Gus disappeared.

Investigators have also said further searches could take place as new information and intelligence becomes available.

HIS FAMILY IS STILL WAITING

For Gus’ family, months have passed without an answer to the question that has haunted them since September:

The remote location and enormous size of the surrounding area have made the investigation particularly challenging.

But police have repeatedly emphasized that the investigation remains active.

Detective Superintendent Fielke said investigators remain determined to locate Gus and establish what happened to him.

The case has also deeply affected the surrounding community, with volunteers and emergency personnel taking part in the search.

A CASE THAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED

Although investigators now have a suspect, Gus has still not been found and no final explanation for his disappearance has been established.

Police have not publicly announced a definitive account of what happened to the child.

For now, detectives continue to examine evidence, interview people connected to the property and conduct additional searches.

The investigation remains focused on finding Gus and providing answers to his family.
