California Man Sentenced to 188 Years After Drunk-Driving Crash Killed Five

A California man has been sentenced to 188 years in prison after a devastating 2023 crash killed five passengers and was followed by an alleged attempt to flee from authorities.

Cameron Garcia, 32, was sentenced to 188 years in prison, falling short of the 200-year sentence that had been expected or discussed in connection with the case.

The deadly incident occurred on February 9, 2023, in Sacramento County.

Authorities said Garcia was driving a Cadillac Escalade at approximately 101 mph (163 km/h) while intoxicated when the vehicle crashed into a tree.

Five passengers were killed in the collision:

• Monte Nunn, 29
• Faith Samuel, 18
• Izabelle Salaz-Stephens, 19
• Curvontay Swygert, 16
• Aahliya Garcia, 17

Post-crash testing reportedly showed Garcia had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.11%, above California’s legal limit for driving, and marijuana was also detected in his system.

The tragedy reportedly did not end with the crash.

Prosecutors said Garcia fled the scene, allegedly carjacked another vehicle and continued attempting to evade authorities before he was eventually apprehended.

A jury later convicted Garcia of five counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, along with additional charges connected to the carjacking and subsequent flight.

The lengthy sentence reflects the devastating consequences of a single high-speed, impaired-driving incident that claimed five lives and left multiple families grieving.

For the victims’ loved ones, the court’s sentence cannot undo the loss of five young lives. But after years of legal proceedings, Garcia will now spend the rest of his life behind bars as a result of his convictions.

The case stands as another devastating reminder of how quickly impaired and reckless driving can turn a journey into an irreversible tragedy.
