HUMAN REMAINS UNEARTHED AFTER WILDFIRE IDENTIFIED AS MISSING MUM WHO VANISHED SIX YEARS AGO — MAN ARRESTED

A devastating mystery surrounding a missing mother has taken a major turn after human remains discovered in a woodland area following a wildfire were identified as Joanne Sheen, a mother of three who disappeared nearly seven years ago.

Joanne, 44, was last seen in December 2019 while travelling from Fareham to Southampton, her home city.

Her family reported her missing in February 2020.

For years, investigators searched for answers — but Joanne’s whereabouts remained unknown.

Now, police have confirmed that remains discovered in Feltham, west London, belong to her.

And a man has been arrested in connection with the case.

WILDFIRE EXPOSED THE REMAINS

The breakthrough came on August 12, 2026, when a member of the public discovered human remains in an area known locally as The Pits, near Padstow Walk.

The woodland is close to Bedfont Lakes Country Park and had recently been affected by wildfires.

Police recovered the remains and began an extensive forensic examination.

DNA testing eventually confirmed the heartbreaking identity:

The remains were those of Joanne Sheen.

The discovery brought an end to years of uncertainty for Joanne’s family — but immediately raised a new question for investigators:

A 56-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED

Following the identification, Hampshire Police arrested a 56-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

The man remained in police custody as investigators continued their enquiries.

Police have stressed that the arrest is part of an ongoing investigation and does not establish guilt.

Joanne’s death is now being formally treated as murder.

Investigators are working alongside the Metropolitan Police to establish how Joanne came to be in Feltham and what happened to her after she disappeared.

YEARS OF SEARCHES HAD PRODUCED NO ANSWERS

Joanne’s disappearance had already generated an extensive investigation.

Police said thousands of lines of enquiry had been pursued, with more than 300 statements taken and searches carried out at more than 10 addresses.

Investigators also conducted searches of waterways and used vessels while trying to establish Joanne’s movements after she vanished.

In 2020, five people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Joanne.

However, all five were released with no further action.

Further searches were carried out in Southampton in subsequent years, including investigations involving properties and areas around the Solent.

Despite those efforts, Joanne remained missing.

 HER FAMILY HAS WAITED YEARS FOR ANSWERS

Joanne’s disappearance left her daughters facing years of uncertainty.

Her daughters Hayley and Layla previously described their mother as a “lovely, loving person.”

In an earlier appeal, Hayley spoke about the unbearable uncertainty of not knowing whether a missing loved one was safe.

She explained how every day brought the same questions and possibilities, leaving the family unable to move forward.

Now, after years of searching, the family finally knows what happened to Joanne — although many questions remain unanswered.

POLICE APPEAL FOR NEW INFORMATION

Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock described the latest development as significant in what has been a long and complex investigation.

Police are now examining new lines of enquiry and are urging anyone who may have information about Joanne’s movements in Southampton or London in 2019 to come forward.

Investigators said even information that may seem insignificant could prove important.

The charity Crimestoppers has also reinstated a £20,000 reward for information that could assist the investigation.

Police have appealed particularly to anyone who may know how Joanne came to be in the Feltham area.
