A WILDFIRE REVEALED A SECRET — HUMAN REMAINS IDENTIFIED AS MISSING MUM JOANNE SHEEN SIX YEARS AFTER SHE VANISHED

A heartbreaking mystery surrounding a missing mother has taken a dramatic new turn after human remains discovered in woodland following a wildfire were identified as Joanne Sheen, who disappeared almost seven years ago.

Joanne, 44, was a mother of three and had not been seen since December 2019.

Now, Hampshire Police have confirmed that the remains found in Feltham, west London, belong to her.

A 56-year-old man from Southampton has also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder as detectives reopen the case with new lines of enquiry.

THE DISCOVERY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Police were called on the evening of August 12, 2026, after a member of the public discovered what appeared to be bones in woodland near Padstow Walk in Feltham.

The area, close to Bedfont Lakes Country Park, had recently been affected by a wildfire.

Initial forensic work established that the remains were human. A postmortem examination was later carried out as detectives launched a murder investigation while they worked to establish the woman’s identity.

Weeks later, DNA testing delivered the devastating answer.

The remains were formally identified as Joanne Sheen.

Her family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.

JOANNE VANISHED IN 2019

Joanne was last seen on December 5, 2019, after travelling by train from Fareham toward Southampton, where she lived.

Her family reported her missing in February 2020.

For more than six years, investigators worked to establish what had happened to her.

According to Hampshire Police, the investigation generated more than 4,000 lines of enquiry, with over 300 statements taken and searches carried out at more than 10 addresses, as well as numerous water searches.

Police also conducted searches around Southampton and the Solent as they tried to reconstruct Joanne’s movements.

But despite years of investigation, her whereabouts remained unknown.

 A MAN HAS NOW BEEN ARRESTED

Following the identification of Joanne’s remains, detectives arrested a 56-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

He remains in custody while police continue their enquiries.

Hampshire Police said Joanne’s death is being treated as murder and that detectives are working closely with the Metropolitan Police to establish exactly what happened to her.

The arrest is an investigative step and does not mean the man has been convicted of any offence.

 THE CASE HAD ALREADY SEEN MAJOR SEARCHES

Joanne’s disappearance had previously led to several major developments.

Five people were arrested in 2020 on suspicion of conspiracy to murder her, but all were subsequently released with no further action.

Police later searched properties in Southampton and carried out searches involving waterways, including the Solent.

Those efforts failed to locate Joanne or establish what had happened to her.

The discovery in Feltham has now created a completely new avenue for investigators.

 HER FAMILY HAS WAITED YEARS FOR ANSWERS

Joanne’s daughters, Hayley and Layla, previously described their mother as a “lovely, loving person.”

During an earlier appeal, Hayley spoke about the emotional torment of having no idea where her mother was or whether she was safe.

Years later, the family finally has confirmation of Joanne’s fate — but many questions remain.

Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock said the identification was a “significant development” in a long and complex investigation.

He said the discovery may provide the family with some answers after years of uncertainty, while stressing that detectives remain determined to establish exactly what happened to Joanne.

POLICE ARE STILL ASKING FOR HELP

Investigators are appealing to anyone who knew Joanne or remembers seeing her around the time she disappeared.

Police particularly want information about her movements in Southampton and surrounding areas in late 2019, as well as information about her movements in London, especially around Feltham and Hounslow.

Even information that seems insignificant could potentially help investigators piece together the final days of Joanne’s life.

A £20,000 Crimestoppers reward has also been reinstated for information received anonymously that leads to the arrest of those responsible.
