A baby’s first days should be filled with love, safety and hope.

For Jason Anthony Weaver, those precious moments were heartbreakingly brief.

The newborn was just seven days old when his short life came to a devastating end in Markle, Indiana, after authorities said he was attacked by a family dog.

The tragedy, which happened in September 2025, has now returned to public attention following developments in the criminal case involving members of Jason’s family.

A NEWBORN’S LIFE CUT SHORT

Jason was born into a family that should have been celebrating the arrival of a new baby.

But on Sept. 4, 2025, emergency responders were called to a home in Huntington County after the newborn was found seriously injured.

According to investigators, Jason had been left in a room with the family’s five-year-old husky-pit bull mix, Chomp.

His father, Austin Kinsey, had reportedly been playing video games nearby before briefly leaving the room to speak with relatives.

Jason’s grandfather, Timothy Kinsey, later heard unusual noises and discovered the infant.

Emergency services were called, but Jason could not be saved.

THE DOG WAS REMOVED FROM THE HOME

Chomp was taken from the property following the incident and was later euthanized.

According to reporting at the time, the dog’s shelter records did not show previous aggression, and a subsequent examination reportedly found no significant abnormalities.

Authorities also investigated the condition of the home.

The Huntington County Health Department later declared the property unfit for habitation.

FAMILY MEMBERS FACE CRIMINAL CASES

The tragedy led to criminal charges against several members of Jason’s family.

Austin Kinsey eventually reached a plea agreement in the case.

On Sept. 14, 2026, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges connected to the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

Another family member, Violet Weaver, has a change-of-plea hearing scheduled for Sept. 29.

The criminal proceedings concern alleged neglect and other circumstances surrounding Jason’s death.

Those allegations must be distinguished from the established fact that Jason died following the incident involving the family dog.
