TEEN MOM ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY LEAVING BABY WITH STRANGER AT TEXAS BUS STOP

An 18-year-old Texas mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her one-month-old baby with a stranger at a downtown San Antonio bus stop before fleeing the area in an Uber, police said.

Karla Ibarra is accused of abandoning her infant son with a woman she had only just met after allegedly telling her that she no longer wanted the child.

The incident happened at a bus stop in downtown San Antonio, where Ibarra reportedly approached Jennifer Benavides and asked to borrow her phone.

What initially appeared to be an ordinary encounter quickly took an unexpected turn.

MOTHER ALLEGEDLY HANDED OVER BABY’S DOCUMENTS

According to Benavides, Ibarra began talking about her baby before suddenly handing over several important documents belonging to the child.

Those documents reportedly included the baby’s birth certificate, Medicaid information and Social Security card.

Benavides told local station KSAT that Ibarra then asked whether she wanted to take the baby.

The woman reportedly told Benavides that she wanted to give her son to someone else.

Benavides said she tried to help the young mother instead of simply taking the baby.

She offered to take Ibarra and her child to a nearby friend’s home, where she believed they could find additional support.

But before they could leave together, police said Ibarra got into an Uber and left the area.

The baby was left with Benavides.

STRANGER CARES FOR INFANT AND CALLS POLICE

After Ibarra left, Benavides and a friend cared for the baby.

They reportedly fed and changed the infant before contacting San Antonio police for assistance.

According to police, Ibarra later returned to the area and was arrested.

The child was subsequently placed in the care of relatives.

The San Antonio Police Department said Ibarra appeared determined to leave the child with a stranger because she allegedly no longer wanted him.

The exact circumstances surrounding her decision remain part of the investigation.

CHARGED WITH CHILD ABANDONMENT

Ibarra has been charged with abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return, according to court records.

A Bexar County judge set her bail at $7,000, according to local reporting. The Irish Sun reported the equivalent figure in pounds.

The charge is an allegation, and Ibarra has not been convicted.

The baby was not reported to have suffered physical harm in the incident.

TEXAS HAS A SAFE HAVEN LAW

The case has also raised questions about Texas’ Safe Haven Law, which allows parents to surrender newborn babies anonymously at designated safe locations under certain conditions without facing criminal prosecution for the abandonment itself.

The law is designed to provide an alternative for parents who feel unable to care for a newborn.

However, the circumstances and timing of Ibarra’s case will determine which laws and protections apply.

Authorities have not publicly detailed why she did not use a designated safe-haven location.

STRANGER SAYS INCIDENT WAS UPSETTING

Benavides said the encounter left her deeply affected.

She told KSAT that she was troubled by the fact that a young mother appeared to feel she had no other option but to leave her baby with someone she had just met.

The incident has also highlighted the importance of resources available to parents facing difficult circumstances.

For now, the infant is with relatives while the legal case against Ibarra moves forward.

The teenager’s next court proceedings will determine how the case develops, while investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment.

Ibarra remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
