A FATHER’S UNYIELDING FAITH: THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF ZUBAIDA HASAN

At nine years old, Zubaida Hasan survived a tragic accident that left her unable to smile or even fully close her eyes. Yet, her father steadfastly refused to accept that nothing more could be done.

In 2001, Zubaida was severely injured in a kerosene explosion at her family home in Afghanistan. As her wounds healed, dense scar tissue fused her neck to her chest, restricting her facial expressions and arm movement. Her father, Muhammad, immediately took her to Iran seeking medical care, but after twenty days in the hospital, doctors admitted they could offer no further help.

Refusing to surrender, Muhammad took another chance months later by bringing Zubaida to a U.S. Army base in Kabul. Deeply moved by her plight, military doctors initiated contacts that eventually reached Dr. Peter Grossman, a prominent plastic surgeon in California. With the backing of the Children’s Burn Foundation, Zubaida was flown to Los Angeles for specialized care.

What followed was extraordinary. Over the course of a year, Zubaida underwent twelve major reconstructive surgeries to release the severe contractures across her face, neck, and limbs. Beyond physical healing, her recovery blossomed as she attended school for the first time, mastered English rapidly, and reclaimed her childhood.

When her treatment concluded, Zubaida returned to Afghanistan, later becoming a beacon of hope for burn survivors worldwide. Her transformation stands as a powerful testament to medical dedication and a father’s persistent love.
