FIVE-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES AFTER BEING TRAPPED UNDER MUD WHILE PLAYING IN BRAZIL

A five-year-old boy has died after being trapped beneath several feet of mud when the ground suddenly collapsed while he was playing with another child in Brazil.

Gael Bernardo Pereira Gomes was reportedly playing inside a large excavation that had been created for a water-storage pond when unstable earth gave way.

His young friend managed to escape.

Gael did not.

THE CHILDREN WERE PLAYING INSIDE A DEEP HOLE

According to reports, the two children had entered a hole measuring around 6.5 feet deep.

The excavation had reportedly been created as part of a water-storage project.

The ground was wet and unstable following storms in the area.

While the children were playing, the surrounding earth suddenly shifted and collapsed into the hole.

Gael became trapped beneath the falling mud while the other child managed to get out.

FIREFIGHTERS RUSHED TO SAVE HIM

Emergency crews were called to the scene and immediately began digging through the earth.

Firefighters used shovels, hoes and their hands as they worked to reach the trapped child.

Officials reportedly avoided using heavy machinery because of concerns that additional movement could cause another collapse and put rescuers at risk.

Sergeant Douglas Arcanjo Dias said rescuers continued working despite the difficult conditions.

After around 20 minutes of digging, they located Gael beneath the earth at a depth estimated between approximately 3.3 and 4.9 feet.

He was pulled from the mud unconscious.

PARAMEDICS FOUGHT TO SAVE HIS LIFE

Gael was reportedly in cardiac arrest when rescuers reached him.

Emergency personnel attempted resuscitation for around an hour.

Despite their efforts, the five-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rescue operation had continued in extremely difficult conditions as firefighters attempted to reach the child as quickly as possible.

“The whole team gave everything they could,” Sergeant Dias said, according to reports.

He also described the emotional weight carried by rescuers when a child cannot be saved.

HIS SCHOOL REMEMBERS A YOUNG STUDENT

Gael attended Serra dos Dourados Municipal School.

The regional education department confirmed his identity and expressed its condolences to his family and the wider school community.

In a statement, education officials described the death as an “irreparable loss” and offered their support to those mourning the child.

For the firefighters who responded, the tragedy was also deeply personal.

Dias said incidents involving children affect rescue teams particularly strongly, even as they continue to work until every possible effort has been made.

The circumstances surrounding Gael’s death serve as a devastating reminder of how quickly unstable ground can become dangerous.

What began as an ordinary moment of play ended when the earth surrounding the excavation suddenly collapsed.
