BOY, 5, DIES AFTER BEING TRAPPED UNDER COLLAPSING EARTH WHILE PLAYING IN BRAZIL

A five-year-old boy has died after being trapped beneath earth when a section of a dirt embankment collapsed over a hole where he had been playing in southern Brazil.

Gael Bernardo Pereira Gomes, a student at Serra dos Dourados Municipal School, was caught beneath the soil on Saturday, September 19, in the rural area of Serra dos Dourados, a district of Umuarama in Paraná state.

The tragedy happened while Gael was playing with other children inside a roughly two-meter-deep hole that had been opened as part of work to construct a water reservoir.

THE GROUND SUDDENLY GAVE WAY

According to local reports, the children were inside the excavation when the surrounding earth suddenly collapsed.

The ground had been wet following recent heavy rain, and part of the embankment gave way, burying Gael beneath the soil.

Another child was able to escape.

Reports say Gael remained trapped for approximately 40 minutes before rescuers were able to reach him.

The boy’s brother, who was at the scene, reportedly helped rescuers identify the exact location where Gael was trapped.

FIREFIGHTERS DUG BY HAND

Emergency crews faced difficult conditions as they attempted to reach the child.

Firefighters carefully removed the soil using shovels and their hands, working to avoid causing another collapse.

After Gael was pulled from the hole, he was found unconscious and in cardiorespiratory arrest.

Paramedics from Brazil’s SAMU emergency service immediately began resuscitation efforts.

The attempts continued for approximately an hour, but Gael could not be saved.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY MOURNS FIVE-YEAR-OLD

News of Gael’s death prompted an outpouring of grief in the local community.

The Municipal Department of Education confirmed that Gael was a student in the Infantil 5B class at Serra dos Dourados Municipal School.

In a statement, education officials expressed their condolences to Gael’s family and friends and said the school community was standing together in support of his loved ones.

The department said it hoped the happy memories of Gael would remain with everyone who had known him.
